Welcome to MarVilla Guest House

About Us

In town for business or pleasure, the MarVilla Guest House is your home away from home, and features original heart pine floors, beaded wood ceilings, and a location offering many amenities.

The town of Mandeville, incorporated in 1840, still has the charm that attracted visitors here so long ago. Our temperate climate, lush oak trees draped in moss, and abundant variety of wild life make Mandeville a perfect getaway.

MarVilla Guest House is one block off of Lake Pontchartrain and is in walking distance of several fine restaurants, antique shops, and boutiques. This small water-oriented community offers lots of water activities like fishing, sailing, and skiing.

For cycling, walking, hiking and skating enthusiasts, nearby Tammany Trace, Mandeville Harbor, and the shoreline of Lake Pontchartrain offer scenic paths to explore.

We at MarVilla want you to enjoy our beautiful city and its sights. So, we invite you to take a ride on the Tammany Trace using one of our bikes, or take a casual walk along the Mandeville lakefront. Making your stay unforgettable is what MarVilla is all about.

Local Attractions

  • Originally a corridor for the Illinois Central Railroad, the Tammany Trace is now a hike and bike trail that spans from downtown Covington, through Abita Springs, Mandeville and Lacombe and ends in Slidell. A separate equestrian path parallels the Trace in several places. St. Tammany Parish government purchased the abandoned Illinois Central Railroad corridor on December 20, 1992. With the help of grants and federal dollars, St. Tammany Parish government has asphalted 31 miles, remodeled railroad trestles into pedestrian bridges, and maintained the Trace.

  • The Trailhead Community Market is at the center of what we love most about our region – Good Food and Great People! Located in the heart of Old Historic Mandeville and operated by the City of Mandeville, and provides a place for over 80 local artisans, producers and growers to bring the very best food and products, offering a variety of seasonal produce, eggs, honey, fresh cut flowers, annual plants, delicious prepared foods, arts and crafts. It is intended to encourage pedestrian activity in the city, provide improved access to local makers, and give the community a festive weekly gathering place to bring people in the community together to support local business, visit with neighbors and enjoy entertainment all year long. We welcome makers, crafters, small brands, and artists. We seek makers playing a substantial role in transforming raw materials into the final product.

The Mandeville Trailhead is conveniently located adjacent to the Tammany Trace and is 4.38 miles south of the Tammany Trace Headquarters. You will find public rest rooms, pavilions, an amphitheater, a tower and picnic facilities. A renovated train station now serves as an additional fun, complete with a splash fountain-sprinkler system that children enjoy. Come experience free Friday evening concerts and many other outdoor activities offered throughout the year.

  • Rest Awhile is the name given to a 2-acre parcel of land on the Mandeville Lakefront that previously served as a hotel in the 1880s and then donated to the International Order of the King’s Daughters and Sons (IOKDS) where it was used as a retreat.

In 2005, Hurricane Katrina heavily damaged Rest Awhile, leaving it to decay. It remained a ghostly structure on the city’s picturesque lakefront for nearly a decade. When Barrett McGuire purchased the property in 2014, the only structures remaining on the property were the Frapart Hotel (1880s), the Sophie Wright Cottage (1916) and the Hadden Cottage (1850s). Previous cottages on the property had either been moved offsite or demolished, damaging the historic integrity of the site.

Upon purchasing Rest Awhile, Barrett moved into the Adaptive Reuse stage to determine viable options to retain the historic fabric of the site and put the property back into commerce. Initial thoughts of creating a retirement village were soon disbanded and he moved forward with a restaurant and bar concept. After almost one year of public hearings, Barrett received the required permits to move forward with their concept.

Prior to restoring the existing buildings an engineering plan was developed to ensure the buildings would withstand future hurricanes and flooding. The Frapart Hotel was raised 2 feet, the Sophie Cottage was raised 4 feet to meet the Frapart Hotel height, the Hadden Cottage was moved from the rear of the site and raised to match the height of the Frapart Hotel and Sophie Cottage. A steel cradle was built underneath each building and subsurface concrete footings and pilings were put in place to ensure structural integrity. A new cottage was constructed to serve as restrooms and a new kitchen addition was constructed behind the Frapart Hotel. An elevated concrete deck connects all the buildings together.

The next phase of the project focused on restoration of the three historic buildings. Barrett practices the “Do only what is required.. maintain the historic integrity of the original building” in his restoration philosophy.

As renovation and construction was nearing completion, Barrett formed a partnership with Pat Gallagher. After seven years of painstaking restoration and construction, Pats Rest Awhile opened its doors in late 2020. It was said, “Just as Rest Awhile is an iconic historic property, Pat is an icon in the restaurant industry. The marriage of the property and the proprietor will surely make for a great place to eat, drink and relax.”

Our beautiful front lawn has a children’s playground set just outside the swimming pool. Nearby in the open yard children can be seen playing kickball on Sundays with parents and other members enjoying the views from the balcony above. We have a fire pit where we have an occasional bonfire, but it is center of attention on New Year’s Eve when the club cochon du lait is tended from the early morning hours throughout the day until the pork is ready to eat!

  • Welcome to the Barley Oak! As you approach the entrance to our street-level garden, you’ll get that familiar craving for the taste of your favorite beer. Even the look of the Barley Oak invites you to leave your worldly troubles behind and join the festival of community inside. Our second story balcony invokes the charm of the south… a place to gather with friends, heft a hearty glass and toast the end of the day sunset.

Once inside… Your Draught House is designed for relaxation and comfort… A special place to enjoy the finest beers in the company of friends and neighbors. In the winter months, you’ll feel at home seated in our heavy leather sofas next to a roaring fireplace with a mug of hearty stout or porter to enjoy. In the warm months, cool wooden bar stools await you as knowledgeable and friendly staff stand ready to serve up crisp lagers and ales after setting the tv’s to sports or topics of the day. Don’t worry, our roaring air conditioning and silently-spinning ceiling fans will cool ya down.

  • Nuvolari's has been a Northshore institution for over 37 years. Founded by Rick Calucci and Paul Murphy in 1983, it sits a few blocks from beautiful Lake Pontchartrain in Old Mandeville.

Stepping into Nuvolari's, its easy to see its lasting appeal. A true classic that has stood the test of time – exquisite wood detailing, charming etched windows, and its eclectic neon green outside signage, they just don’t make ‘em like this anymore. You can eat there weekly and spot an enchanting detail you never noticed before.

Chef Josh began working for Paul and Rick in 2016 at their other restaurant institution, Jacmel Inn, in Hammond, LA. It turned out to be the start of a significant relationship and partnership for all three of them.

Over the years, Chef Josh was able to contribute to what would become some of the best years for Jacmel Inn. After a long and very lustrous career for Paul and Rick, there was no question who should take over Nuvolari's when it was time to finally retire – the one Chef they had full faith in.

Chef Josh was able to pick up where they left off and its safe to say that he has put as much sweat and tears into it in 2022 just as Paul and Rick did in 1983.

Without question, it is, and will always be, a family-owned, neighborhood restaurant dedicated to its patrons. Offering only the freshest ingredients and all handmade pastas, Nuvolari's is best described as modern Italian with traditional roots. Come in, grab a seat, order a glass of wine, and get fed.

If you happen to sit at the bar next to a man in his 60’s that will inevitably know someone in your family and probably grew up in his neighborhood, he will talk to you for a while, its probably Chef Josh’s dad. Say hi to him for us!

  • Flamjeaux Coffee Company is locally owned and operated and serves the local communities of Mandeville, Covington New Orleans area and the Gulf Coast. Our fresh roasts can be purchased at our newly relocated interactive coffee lab in Old Mandeville and at the Mandeville Trailhead Community Market each Saturday from 9a - 1p.

Flamjeaux is a manifestation of a dream that has been brewing for years. My 20 plus years in foodservice began in coffee as a General Manager of the flagship location of Community Coffee’s spinoff CC’s Gourmet Coffee House (CC’s) in Baton Rouge, Louisiana and where my love affair with coffee began. In some form or fashion, coffee seemed to follow me throughout my career with an ultimate curiosity about roasting. It seemed a natural progression, only backwards, as roasting is where it all begins. But for me, it is my hope that roasting is where it all ends as my last job doing something I love and about which I am very passionate.

  • If you have a taste for Old New Orleans food with a $1,000,000 view then Rips is for you. Located on the Northshore of Lake Pontchartrain you will find some of the best fresh Seafood, Steaks, PoBoys, Appetizers, Soups and Desserts in South Louisiana.

  • At The Bean, we believe that coffee and lattes are not just drinks, but experiences. That's why we strive to create a warm and inviting space where our customers can relax and enjoy the subtle nuances of each cup. We believe that great coffee  should be savored, not rushed.

“What a wonderful guest house, so clean and such magnificent ambiance. I can't say enough about Michael, who went above and beyond making my 70th birthday a hugh success, not to mention my husband who planned the trip. The red and yellow roses and bottle of wine to greet me were just perfect. We will go again soon and plan to return for my birthday next year. Don't miss Mar-villa Guest House in Mandeville, Louisiana.”
